Hi, Everyone,

A breakfast cereal I can get behind

Confession: breakfast cereal was one of my favorite foods growing up. I’d have a bowl of cereal for breakfast, one after school, and often one before bed! But as I got older, I learned that most breakfast cereals are full of junk—refined sugar, processed grains, and industrial seed oils. That’s why I was excited to learn about Lovebird cereal. It’s made with just a few simple ingredients like cassava, coconut, and sea salt, and it’s lightly sweetened with raw honey and coconut sugar (with only 2 to 6 g of sugar per serving). All their cereals are organic, grain-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, and non-GMO. They’re also Paleo and Autoimmune Protocol-compliant, and they even have an unsweetened option. Higher protein intake = healthier eating

A new study showed that higher protein intake while dieting led to a healthier diet pattern. I’ve always recommended higher protein intakes, both in general and for people who are trying to lose weight. Why? Because protein is the most satiating macronutrient—it helps us feel full. It also has a stabilizing effect on blood sugar and, according to this study, promotes better food choices overall. So how much protein is best? I recommend at least 20% of calories for most people, which comes out to 125 g per day on a 2,500-calorie diet. That’s more than people tend to eat, in my experience as a clinician. Food for thought!

Light exposure during sleep linked to obesity, diabetes, and hypertension

According to surveys, 66% of Americans admit to sleeping with their phone in their bedroom at night. (The actual number is likely higher since people often don’t admit to things they know are harmful on surveys.) Why is this a problem? One reason is that studies consistently link light exposure during sleep to metabolic disruption. A new study published in the journal Sleep adds to this research. The paper found that older adults (between 63 and 84 years of age) who were exposed to any amount of light during sleep were at higher risk for obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Keep that phone out of your bedroom!

Was the FDA’s approval of Covid shots for children 0 to 4 years old evidence-based?

I was alarmed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) recent approval of Covid vaccines for children 0 to 4 years of age—and I’m not alone. A group of 76 physicians in the UK recently signed a letter to the JCVI COVID-19 vaccines subcommittee with a devastating critique of the FDA’s decision, highlighting the lack of clinical need (i.e., the virtually zero risk of serious outcomes in this age group), known and unknown risks, high rates of natural immunity, and complete absence of real clinical endpoints showing that the vaccines reduce hospitalization or death in young children. Regardless of where you stand on Covid vaccines for adults, I urge you to read this letter before deciding whether to vaccinate your young child.

Staring at yourself during Zoom calls worsens your mood!

Zoom calls have become a feature of many of our daily lives—whether we like it or not. But how we do those calls makes a difference. A new study found that the more we look at ourselves during a Zoom chat, the more our mood worsens. Fortunately, Zoom has an option to hide your own video so you can’t see yourself. You can find out how to do that here. I’ve had my own video off in Zoom calls for a few months now, and it makes a difference!
