You know how important sleep is.
Yet if you’re like many people, you’re either not getting enough—or you just don’t sleep well.
Sadly, I’ve been in that latter group for the past several months.
And all of my typical sleep hacks—blue-light-blocking glasses, sauna, meditation, low-dose melatonin, L-theanine, etc.—just weren’t working.
One of the things that makes the biggest difference in my sleep is keeping the bedroom cool. I wrote about the importance of this in my first book, The Paleo Cure.
Research has shown that temperature can act as a sleep switch, triggering your brain to send signals to the rest of your body that it is time to go to sleep (and stay asleep).
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the optimal temperature for sleep is between 60°F and 67°F (15°C to 19°C), and temperatures above 71°F (24°C) are likely to interfere with sleep quality.
In many parts of the world, even here where I live in temperate Berkeley, California, it’s difficult to maintain a temperature that low in the bedroom during a good chunk of the year (especially now, in the summer!) without air conditioning.
Even if you have AC, a fair amount of your own body heat will be absorbed and reflected by your mattress—preventing your body temperature from dropping to the optimal level for sleep.
This is where OOLER comes in.
It consists of a mattress pad and control unit that circulates water throughout the microtubing in the pad, which can be cooled or heated anywhere from 55°F to 110°F.
And here’s the crucial thing to understand: Water is 25 times more effective than air at optimizing temperature.
What’s more, cooling the surface of the bed—rather than the air in the bedroom—has a much greater impact on your core body temperature and is far more economical than cranking the AC up to get the ambient temp down to 60°F to 67°F, especially if you live in a hot climate!
